Where do the parties stand on coal?

As the peak industry body representing the Australian coal sector, Coal Australia advocates on behalf of companies operating in New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia, as well as our 60,000-strong Friends of Coal supporter base. With the outcome of the election likely to shape the future of the industry, we believe it is essential for our members, associates, and supporters to hear directly from those seeking to represent them.

We posed the same six questions to each party and have committed to publishing their responses in full, as they come through, right here on our website.

  1. Does your party see a future for coal mining in Australia?
  2. Should we continue to supply coal to other countries, both for electricity generation and steel production, for as long as that demand remains?
  3. What are some tangible examples or policy proposals that you believe demonstrate support for coal mining in Australia?
  4. Does your party support retaining coal-fired power stations until there is a cost-effective alternative?
  5. Do you stand behind us in seeking to remove aspects of red and green tape, including an overhaul of duplication in the project approvals process?
  6. What is your party’s central message to our coal mining communities?
