FutureCoal and Coal Australia Strengthen Global Coal Industry Alignment Through Reciprocal Memberships

This initiative is a first step toward greater consistency between domestic and international advocacy, helping ensure the sector is represented through a clear, credible and aligned narrative across policy discussions.

Coal Australia will continue leading on domestic industry issues, while FutureCoal supports its members with international advocacy across export markets, global policy, sustainable technologies, investment and the future of coal.

Both organisations recognise that maintaining a credible fact based narrative for Australian coal requires coordinated representation at both the domestic and international level. Participation across both organisations remains crucial to ensuring Australian industry perspectives continue shaping global markets, policy and investment discussions, particularly as the sector continues advancing sustainability, operational efficiency and emissions-reduction pathways through existing and proven technologies across the coal value chain.

Joint members of Coal Australia and FutureCoal, including New Hope, Whitehaven Coal and Yancoal, are already demonstrating leadership across both platforms, with broader participation from Australian industry becoming increasingly important as activist pressure expands to target metallurgical coal producers.

FutureCoal CEO Michelle Manook said:

“Australia’s coal industry cannot afford fragmented representation at a time when global policy, investment and activist campaigns are increasingly targeting the sector, now including metallurgical coal producers essential to steelmaking and industrial development.

“Strong alignment between domestic and international advocacy is now critical to protecting Australia’s position in global markets and ensuring the industry’s voice is heard where decisions are being made.

“Australian industry participants need to step forward and support coordinated representation domestically and internationally, because if our industry is not actively shaping the global narrative, others will do it for us.”

Coal Australia CEO Stuart Bocking said:

“Australia is rich in coal, and some of the highest quality coal in the world. It is our second largest export and critical to securing our national economy. Yet too many in politics and activism continue to undermine the strategic importance of our coal industry to national prosperity, energy security and our global industrial supply chains.

“At a time when world demand for coal is at a record high, Australia with its stocks of some of the cleanest coal in the word, needs to be at the forefront of generating skilled high-paying jobs, boosting national income and growing our trade credentials.

“The Australian public should be outraged that an industry which has underpinned regional communities, government revenues and national economic strength for decades is too often falsely and maliciously painted as a political liability rather than a national asset.

“This shared approach with FutureCoal strengthens alignment across the global sector while recognising the distinct and complementary roles both our organisations play. A strong, coordinated and unapologetic narrative across Australia and international markets will be critical to securing the sector’s long-term future and I look forward to seeing more of the Australian coal industry players supporting this alignment through active engagement reinforcing this future.”
